India dispatches second batch of BrahMos missiles to Philippines

India has dispatched a second batch of batteries of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system to the Phillippines, fulfilling its contractual obligation signed in 2022 between the two nations.

Last year, India had transported the first of the three batteries of the BrahMos missiles, having range of 290 km and speed of 2.8 Mach, as part of the $375 million worth deal. It was the first export order for the missilesystem.

“This time, the missile system has been shipped to the Philippines. Earlier, it was delivered through Indian Air Force transport aircraft,” sources aware of the development said.

India has also trained the Philippines Navy personnel in handling of the cruise missile system which it has bought to scale up its defence capabilities owing to increasing threat from China in the South China Sea.

Sources stated that , other countries are also taking keen interest in the missile system given that it stand outs in its class.

Talks with other countries

The talks with Indonesia have reached an advanced stage for the purchase of cruise missiles, with the Southeast Asian country expressing its interest in writing to the Indian government, sources said.

The deal for the anti-ship variant of the missiles system is expected to be worth around $ 450 million.

A high level delegation, led by Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy Admiral Muhammad Ali, visited BrahMos Aerospace Private Ltd headquarters in Delhi on January 27, as India negotiates with Indonesia for the export of the missile system. The visiting delegation was briefed about BrahMos capabilities.

Similarly, India is hopeful of pulling off a $700 million contract with Vietnam also for the BrahMos coastal missile system in a few months. Like the Philippines, Vietnam too is pursuing the contract to safeguard its coast against China’s aggressive maritime interests.

The UAE, and Saudi Arabi are some of other countries that are also in touch with India to explore the possibility of procuring BrahMos.
