Conference tournament action began in the Horizon League, Patriot League and Sun Belt on Tuesday, as the madness of March continued building up. The first automatic bid of the postseason will be handed out Saturday, when the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament concludes.
Among those in Horizon League action on Tuesday were No. 6 seed Oakland and No. 11 seed Green Bay. The Grizzlies were an NCAA Tournament darling last season, when they knocked out No. 3 seed Kentucky in the first round. While coach Greg Kampe’s squad still needs three more wins to return to the Big Dance, it got the postseason off to a good start with an 96-72 win over the Phoenix. The outcome ended Green Bay’s season with a 4-28 mark under first-year coach Doug Gottlieb.
Four more conference tournaments are joining the postseason fray Wednesday, as the race for automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament heats up with the Big South, NEC, OVC and Summit League all getting in on the action. Each of the four are projected to be one-bid leagues for the Big Dance, which means the stakes will be massive for every game until a champion is crowned.
Among those in action will be Central Connecticut State, which is the No. 1 seed in the NEC Tournament. The Blue Devils enter with the nation’s longest winning streak at 12 games and will be taking on No. 8 seed Le Moyne. CCSU hasn’t been dancing since 2007 but is just three games away from punching a ticket to the NCAA Tournament. The other three conference tournaments getting underway Wednesday will each be in preliminary action with their top seeds getting first-round byes.
As the week goes on, more conference tournaments will begin as the madness of March begins leading in to Selection Sunday for the NCAA Tournament on March 16. When conference tournament results roll in, we’ll be keeping track of them here as teams begin to claim automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
