Mouni Roy’s latest supernatural thriller The Bhootnii, which hit theaters on May 1, has garnered largely positive reviews from both critics and audiences alike. The film, sees Roy delivering a captivating performance as the ghostly antagonist Mohabbat, whose tragic backstory transforms her into a destructive force haunting the students of a college campus.

Roy’s nuanced portrayal of a spirit torn between love and vengeance has been particularly praised, with many critics highlighting it as one of her finest works to date.

In fact, the actress documented her journey of playing Mohabbat and talked about how she shot for 45 days straight wearing a harness every day and even joked about spending many nights hanging on tree tops.

Mouni’s character’s tagline ‘Pyaar yaa Pralay’ which translates to Love or Destruction, perfectly encapsulates the duality of her character Mohabbat, whose name itself, meaning love, creates a poignant contrast with her vengeful actions. This juxtaposition forms the emotional core of the narrative as viewers discover how Mohabbat’s heartbreaking past leads her to become a terrifying supernatural presence.

Sharing screen space with Bollywood veteran Sanjay Dutt, along with a supporting cast including Sunny Singh, Palak Tiwari, Aasif Khan and BeYounick, who makes his Bollywood debut, Roy holds her own with a performance that balances ethereal menace with tragic vulnerability.

One of the film’s most talked-about sequences features an intense face-off between Mouni Roy and Sanjay Dutt’s characters, set to the energetic backdrop of Shiv Tandav. This climactic confrontation, praised for its stunning visual effects and emotional weight, has become the highlight of the film, with audiences particularly impressed by the technical execution and the palpable tension between the two powerhouse performers.

As The Bhootnii continues its theatrical run, the film stands as a testament to Roy’s versatility as an actress and her ability to command the screen even in supernatural roles that demand both physical presence and emotional depth. After this venture, Mouni will be seen in yet another neve-seen-before avatar in Salahkaar, set for a 2025 release.
