As the Coalition suffered a devastating election defeat last night, history repeated itself.

In Australia’s outlets for conservative voices — Sky News Australia and News Corp’s various mastheads — a more or less same cast of hosts and pundits have already begun diagnosing why the right was unable to turn its fortunes around.

Despite the different background to this year’s election — a unique election campaign, a different government and drastically different economic and geopolitical conditions — Crikey couldn’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu when hearing and reading arguments about what the Liberal and National parties must do to take back the nation. 

It was so similar that we wanted to put it to this test. Below is a series of quotes from the same talking heads after the 2022 and 2025 elections. Can you tell which quote is from which election post-mortem?
